Dear Relatives,
Today is International Day of Biodiversity (IDB), and we join the global community in celebrating our Mother Earth. This United Nations–sanctioned day is dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action on biodiversity issues. This year’s theme, “Be part of the Plan,” calls upon all of us to take meaningful steps to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by supporting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as The Biodiversity Plan.
At the Water Protector Legal Collective, we are particularly aware of the crucial role that Indigenous Peoples play in protecting biodiversity. Although we make up less than 5% of the global population, Indigenous Peoples protect 80% of Mother Earth's remaining biodiversity. Our work in environmental law and our representation of Water Protectors highlight the symbiotic relationship between Indigenous communities and Mother Earth. Our relatives are often the frontline defenders of biodiversity, maintaining practices that have safeguarded ecosystems for generations.
🌍 What’s Happening?
Biodiversity Day is a time to celebrate the intricate web of life on Earth. It’s an opportunity to reflect on how each of us can contribute to preserving our planet’s biodiversity. This year’s IDB coincides with two significant meetings in Nairobi:
The twenty-sixth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) from May 13-18.
The fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI) from May 21-29.
These meetings will set the stage for CBD COP 16, scheduled to take place in Colombia later this year.
📅 When and Where?
IDB is observed annually on May 22nd across the globe. It’s a day for people everywhere to come together, celebrate, and commit to actions that support biodiversity.
